What is Internal Linking?

Internal linking is the most commonly known best practices to increase crawling effectiveness. So you need to be aware of how you can do this in a good way.

You can get a better SEO experience with it. Because it is useful for users and search engines as well.

Ok, First of all, we will discuss, what is this?

When you create a web page and you think that you have one more page related to this blog post. You can add this page to your article.

You can create multiple links point like this. So, this type is known as internal linking.

Opinion about internal linking by market leaders

Neil Patel's view about internal linking

Neil Patel, Co-founder of Neil Patel Digital
There’s one advanced technique that a lot of SEOs completely neglect. It’s called internal linking. I did it. It started simple. Guess what. When I started doing that, my site exploded!

Brian Dean's view about internal linking

Brian Dean, Founder of Backlinko
Internal linking: You must guide the little spider.

Note: According to me little spider is a Google's Spider that is also known as a crawler.

For your better knowledge, I want to explain its type. We have two types of linking.

Clustered type and Cross-linking.

The first type is recommended for SEO good practice. In this connection are connected according to categories.

If the text is not related to the category then you can not create a link to a page.

For Example, we have a web page that is telling about fruits and other web pages is about car specifications. There is no relation between them.

Hence we cannot create a link.

In another example, suppose I have an article about the benefits of fruits and I also have blog posts about Apple, Orange, and Grapes. I can add these posts to my article.

Hope you got a better idea.

Let me talk about the second type. Where you are creating connections those are not related to content directly. But you are doing.

What will happen when the user sees this. The user will think about what I am looking for and why this page is pointing me, there is no information about my query.

So, this is a bad experience for the user and your ranking will be down or you will not get the organic traffic. This is also bad for Googlebot.

Use of Nofollow Tag

Now you are aware of linking structure that you need to develop. But not the exactly right way to do this.

Let me explain more.

Once you have done your linking you might be confused about the "nofollow" attribute that is used where you want to tell the search engine that doesn’t follow this link.

Now the question is.

Are you need it for your linking.

So my answer is No. Why I am saying this. You have no reason to do this. So avoid it.

See Matt Cutts's view about Nofollow.

But when you want to link with other sites then you might need this because Google doesn’t want to pass the Page Rank.

Let me clarify. If you are linking to other sites and you are not adding "nofollow" then it will show that you are getting money to do this that looks like paid link schemes.

Paid links are against Google guidelines. So avoid it to get noticed with this bad strategy.

So the next question is.

What are the situations where we can enable "dofollow" for links?

I am not saying you have to put it in all the external links. You might leave it where you think you have a genuine post for your readers that will enhance their knowledge by adding an outgoing link.

I think now you have might a little bit of confusion. How can I ensure that I am not passing the Page Rank?

Ok, I suggest you don’t add links those look like you are promoting them. This statement will clear your confusion.

How You Can Create text links

You need to use the anchor tag for this purpose. Your internal linking structure should be descriptive. Optimized anchors will help you perform better in search results.

Remember to link with the category page.

Internal linking strategy

Always think about user experience or you might think like a user and see your article and rate it. If you think you are explaining everything that the user might want to know. Then you have done your best.

Don’t add too many links on the home page those are not required. Add important pages that are helpful to your audience.
