Site Audit - How To Do? - See Technically

While doing an SEO site audit. You are required to develop your strategy in 9 ways. Out of 9, there are 7 facts that come under technical audit. These are the steps where most SEO unprofessional do mistake most of the time.

Even the SEO guys who know about On-Page Optimization and Off-Page SEO optimization. You can not guaranty that they are also aware of technical issues. So you need to care about them.

Here I am going to explain those ones.

Technical audit

SEO audit

Doing an analysis of the website from all angles with respect to SEO is known as an SEO audit. You need a tool to analyze data. For it, I suggest to you, use Google search console and for any development error. SEMrush To see the other technical issues.

HTTP Status Code Analysis

When you are doing any redirect then you should make sure about its status code. I mean suppose you are redirecting one URL to another because the old one is deleted or permanently have no use in the future. 

So for this, you can use 301 permanently redirects. For temporary redirects use 302 redirects. Learn the HTTP status code if you don't know this number.

HTTP Header Analysis

With the help of the HTTP header, you can set the instructions for robots. What that means. It means you can say to crawler which of the web page need not index or follow. 

In the SEO audit, you have to make sure that all of the X-Robots Tag implemented correctly. For your help, I have already written one post about HTTP header. Read it to understand it more conveniently.

Note: If you have PDF files on your website then do NoIndex with the header tags.

Site linking structure

Your site should be navigatable through one main page. When you will create a link for your website or blog then make sure it has proper anchor text within the link. 

Moreover, we can categorize links into two types. One is inbound and another is outbound. 

Let me explain, inbounds are those links that are coming from another site to your site. In other words, we can say them to backlinks. Which are very important but need to collect them relevantly.

It means both websites that have a link in between should be on the same topic that describes some extra information to the users. 


We have outbound links that created by you for the help of readers of your website. It is a similar way as inbound links but on the opposite side. Here links go from your site to another whereas in inbound comes from another.

Geographic Testing

Have you heard about Hreflang Tags? If not then you need to know about it and how you can use it for your global website.

For example, your website has a page for the USA audience and the Italian audience. So for this, we have two pages with the same content but in different languages.

You can tell the search which version of your web page should be accessed by a specific country. This is possible with Hreflang Tags.

Moreover, these Tags testing is known as geographic testing.

Parameter Testing

Parameter values are set dynamically when the page is called with additional values in its URL. Suppose you have one web page and it has also some extra functionality to the same page with any kind of trigger that shows the add on data.

Robots.txt Checking

It is known as the resource exclusion protocol. You have to check in this step that your crawler should have access to the URLs you want to index.

Moreover, any of path which is not developed for search engine, you can block them.

Sitemap Checking

Most important is your sitemap size limit is 50 MB and you can not include more than this. For more URLs, you can submit the sitemap index.

Your sitemap and sitemap index should include your all indexable images, videos, and URLs. check any syntax error while creating the sitemap. Sitemap that has a sitemap index known as multiple sitemaps.

Note: You don't need a sitemap index until you cross 50,000 URLs.

Content audit

You should be familiar with the content optimization for this audit. You have to check the content quality and its uniqueness in comparison with other available content on the search engine.

It should be well optimized from an SEO point of view. This means proper use of H1 Tag, Meta Tags, alt text, anchor text, and proper linking structure.

Off-Page audit

In the off-page monitoring, you have to check backlinks and any broken outbound link. Once your On-Page SEO done this is the step you have to perform.
